Promises for reading God’s Word

Joshua 1:8,9.

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth
but thou shalt meditate therein day and night…...Then
thou shalt prosper and have good success. 1:8

The day in which we live brings concern and sometimes fear to our hearts. Joshua lived in such a day also. His people had just come through 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. Moses, their leader was dead. The cloak of leadership had now fallen to him. It was for him to take his people across the Jordan at high tide and enter the unknown; to claim the land God had promised to their forefathers. God’s promise to Joshua in 1:7-9 is just as reliable for us today as it was for him. Let’s take a look at verse 8. God’s Word was to be hidden in his heart. He was to read and meditate on it day and night. If he did this…THEN he need not fear the days ahead.

Knowing God’s promises and obeying His commands brings Faith, Romans 10:17…. gives Wisdom, Ps.119:18….bestows Peace, John 14:27 …and relieves Fear, Isa. 41:10 and Prov.19:23.

In order for Joshua to follow God’s directions, he had to know what those directions were. God said we are to read His Word and meditate on it. Don’t let it depart from you and observe to do according to all that is written. Then….!! Some one has wisely said regarding God’s Word:

“Read it to be wise – Believe it to be safe --
Practice it to be holy.” A good challenge!

Joshua obeyed God, followed His commands and led the Israelites across the Jordan. Since God’s promises never change, we too can expect His guidance for our lives. Joshua said, “ As for me, and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

When we read and are familiar with God’s Word, we will say the same.
